1. Buy a digital scale

This seems simple. I recommend buying a digital scale accurate to 0.2 lbs (2% of a pound) before you start dieting. I'll explain why below. I also suggest either buying a scale to record your daily weight or manually recording your portions every day. I bought one that was accurate to 0.2 lbs and recorded my weight; it only cost me $22 at Sam's Club (a large supermarket in the US) (very cheap!). (For me) it was a successful investment.
